The Sorrow was a member of the Cobra Unit who was extremely gifted as a medium and was able to communicate with the dead. By communicating with the dead, The Sorrow is able to have an advantage on the battlefield and he is even able to learn enemy positions from them. The Sorrow joined the Cobra unit and fought with them during World War II. The Boss and The Sorrow became very close during these years, and soon The Boss was pregnant. During the landing at Normandy, The Boss had their child, a baby boy who would grow up to be Revolver Ocelot. The Philosophers took the baby from them and grew him into one of their spies. The Sorrow returned to the Soviet Union after World War II and in 1962 he found himself facing off against his former friend, The Boss at Tselinoyarsk. The Sorrow allowed The Boss to kill him and complete her mission.
In 1964, The Sorrow appeared several times to Naked Snake and also begins several rain storms. When Naked Snake nearly drowned in a river, The Sorrow confronted him and forced Snake to walk down a river and see the sorrow of everyone that he had killed. The Sorrow also tells Snake of some of the things in his future, then he returns him to the living world. The Sorrow provides Snake with one last bout of help when he strikes Colonel Volgin with lightning.
