McDonnell Miller is a retired FOXHOUND drill sergeant, and a good friend of Solid Snake. He was referred to as "Hell Master" during his time as a drill sergeant, and some gave him the nickname "Master Miller" as a sign of respect.
Master was a master of survival in the SAS, and also a member of the Green Berets and a sergeant at a US Marine boot camp. It is believed that he met Snake at this boot camp. After the Zanzibar incident, Master retired and moved to Alaska, occasionally helping to train the Alaskan scouts.
Master was murdered in his home three or more days prior to the Shadow Moses incident, and Liquid Snake then assumed his identity in order to manipulate Snake.
