Frank Yeager was a child in Mozambique, when he became a hired assassin for the militia in south Africa. During 1966, he was rescued by Big Boss and taken to the hospital, only to be kidnapped by the Philosophers for their super soldier program. He would be the only test subject to survive and given the codename Null since he is the single survivor, and with no emotion or memories due to being readjusted after each mission the name fitted him. He would be recruited into the rebel FOX unit in 1970 as their assassin, and would do battle with Big Boss only to find Big Boss is the one man who won't die by his hand. After losing twice to Big Boss, he subsides and Big Boss returns him to a hospital to recover and regain his humanity.
Sometime during the 1970's, he would regain his humanity and be recruited by Big Boss to join FOXHOUND. He would soon be the squad leader and recieve the codename "Gray Fox". He would command the unit throughout the 80's and became the legendary soldier 2nd in command to the chief commander of FOXHOUND Big Boss. Fox was also the agent sent in to investigate Outer Heaven, and was captured during the mission. He was rescued by Solid Snake, and together they brought about the downfall of Metal Gear. However, upon discovering that it was Big Boss who was behind it, Fox deserted FOXHOUND and disappeared along with his foster father, reappearing in 1999 during the Zanzibar Land incident. Once again, Solid Snake was sent in to put an end to it, leaving Big Boss pushing up the daisies. Fox was also presumed dead.
However, Fox's body was recovered and he was used as a guinea pig for the gene therapy project, in which he was fitted with an experimental exoskeleton that resembled a ninja suit. The exoskeleton provided more proficient agility and strength, but also had terrible effects on his mind. In 2003, Fox killed Dr. Clark, the man responsible for the project, and Naomi helped him to cover it up and go into hiding.
Two years later, Fox was mysteriously present at the Shadow Moses incident, apparently seeking a battle to the death with Solid Snake. He also provided Snake with helpful information under the alias "Deepthroat," and Snake did not find out who this mysterious tipster was until Fox appeared alongside him during his battle with Metal Gear Rex. Fox managed to destroy Rex's radome, enabling Snake to fire into the cockpit in order to destroy it. However, Liquid Snake finally came to be the one to kill him, crushing him under Rex's heavy foot.
