Big Boss is known as the greatest soldier of the 20th century. At one time was a test subject for human testing in Bikini Atoll, and being irradiated and becoming sterile. He caught the eye of The Boss, the mother of the US special forces. He became her apprentice and they trained for over 10 years, in developing close quarters combat, a form of judo. During 1961, she vanished from Snake's contact, and would not resurface until 1964.
In 1964, Naked Snake at the time he was, is sent into the mountainess region of Russia, Tselinoyarsk or "Virgin Cliffs" to retrieve a captured rocket scientist being held by the Russians. This scientist, Sokolov, developed a nuclear tank capable of operating solo, named "Shagohod", which was in high value to the USSR to have nuclear superiority of the West, which would end the Cold War. This was dubbed the Virtious Mission, a try out mission for the unit FOX to see if its worthy enough to become an official unit of the Military. The mission ends in failure after the defection of the Boss, and the loss of Sokolov to The Boss and her famous Cobra unit. She and the GRU commander Colonel Volgin escape leaving Snake near death after a clash with The Boss. Volgin launches a Davy Crockett nuclear warhead at Sokolov's lab, which is later blamed on The Boss. The Russians cause a uproar due to the disaster and America is held responsible.
Naked Snake, is the one who can change this. The US government cuts a deal with the USSR, if they capture The Boss and kill her, all out Nuclear War will be avoided. Snake is sent back into Tselinoyarsk a week later to rescue Sokolov before he completes the Shagohod before it becomes launch capable. Snake meets with his mole contact "Eva" who defected to the USSR and became a sleeper agent within the Volgin private army. Major Ocelot, a russian Spetznaz, Volgin's 2nd in command, battles with Snake and loses. Snake defeats the Cobra unit, only to be captured and tortured by Volgin in questioning who the mole in his unit was. Volgin thinks Snake is after the Philosophers Legacy. The true holders of power in the three great powers of the world, China, the USSR, and the USA are the Philosophers. The secret fund set up during WWII to fund the army against Germany is the Legacy of funds established by the three Philosopher governments. In mid torturing, Ocelot shot Snake's right eye out during the interrigation of Eva, after being suspected of being the mole. Snake escaped, Volgin is battled and defeated, and Snake eventually destroys the Shagohod itself. Snake and Eva reach The Boss, and Snake confronts her. The Boss destroys Volgins Groznjy Grad base with the 2nd Davy Crockett warhead launcher she smuggled out of the USA. They battle and Snake defeats her and inherits her title, as Boss. Eva turns out to be a sleeper agent of the Chinese Philosophers. Only to be given a decoy copy of it, but was able to obtain the specs for the Shagohod, which made China a nuclear power.
Eva reveals to Snake on a recording, that it was all a elaborate show. That The Boss's defection was a ruse, only to get into the ranks of Volgin and steal the Philosophers Legacy which he inherited from his father for the USA branch Philosophers. She had to give her life, so the Legacy could be obtained. Naked Snake is awarded a metal for his service for Operation Snake Eater and is given a higher ranking, Big Boss, above even The Boss. He later retires from the unit, and refuses to accept what the government did to his mentor.
In 1970, Big Boss is kidnapped by his former unit FOX. They hijack a Russian missile base in San Hieronymo, a Peninsula in the very northern area of South America. They Hijack a American made Metal Gear off the Russian Granin design. They threatnen to use it on the motherland Russia. Big Boss is tortured by a member of the unit, Cunningham, in retrieving the remaining half of the Philosophers Legacy. He later breaks out and meets a green beret, Roy Campbell. Big Boss finds that he is seen as a traitor due to the fact he left the unit 6 years prior. He and Campbell must stop the FOX unit by themselves since the USA is in Vietnam. They together, form a unit to take on the FOX unit and the Red Army that is under FOX's control. Snake defeats the FOX unit, and comes across a child soldier he once rescued in Mozambique, who was a child soldier. Named, Frank Yeager "The Frank Hunter" who became a genetic guinea pig in creating "The Perfect Soldier". He later defeats Null, the name Yeager goes by. Snake defeats Gene, the head of the unit and prevents the nuclear strike by destroying the Metal Gear equipped ICBM rocket, which Gene had changed to destroy the two hubs of the Philosophers, the CIA and Pentagon instead of the USSR. Gene gives Big Boss funds he used for Army's Heaven along with personal data of soldiers, saying how they are similar, and understand the importance of soldiers.
Snake and his recruited army return to America, and later forms FOXHOUND after his experiences being a platoon leader. He later recruits his former combat buddy Roy Campbell and Frank Yeager who becomes his head lieutenant of FOXHOUND, under the codename "Gray Fox", the only member of the unit to recieve the code Fox. Big Boss becomes wounded in battle and goes into a coma, in using battle data and genetics, they take DNA samples from him in creating genetically cloned sons to be the absolute superior soldiers from the greatest soldier at the time, Ocelot also takes part in the Project that would be called "Les Enfants Terribles".
Big Boss in the 80's, uses the funds for Army's Heaven and secretly creates the nation that Gene once invisioned and dubbed it "Outer Heaven" in south Africa. A place where soldiers are honored, in control, and not pawns of the governments of the world. He kidnaps a scientists, Dr. Madnar, who he uses to develop the Nuclear battle tank "Metal Gear" in threatning the world with Nuclear attack. He uses Gray Fox as a decoy to be sent in by Big Boss to have a false mission to be captured, to have his genetic duplicate son Solid Snake sent in so he would have the chance to kill him. But the opposite happens, Snake defeats Big Boss's army and defeats Big Boss along with Metal Gear TX-55. Big Boss escapes and using his remaining funds forms a stronghold in the Zanzibar in the middle east. Big Boss uses Madnar to create a fully complete version of Metal Gear, Metal gear D. The retired Solid Snake is called back in by the commanding member of FOXHOUND Roy Campbell. Snake infiltrates and duels with his former combat buddy Gray Fox and kills him. After which Snake destroys Metal Gear D, and finds Big Boss, alive. The two duel to the death, and Snake finally kills Big Boss.
Big Boss's body is retrieved by the US government and is used in many genetic experiments in creating superior soldiers. By studying his DNA, scientists discover which genes create better soldiers, and use that as the mold to create the Next Generation Special Forces "Genome Soldiers". Those soldiers would soon come under the command of his Genetic son Liquid Snake, the squad leader of Big Boss's former unit FOXHOUND. Liquid Snake, would hijack the Shadow Moses base in Alaska and use Metal Gear REX as leverage on the US government to hand over Big Boss's body or he would launch a nuclear attack. He wishes to get Big Boss's body in correcting genetic mistakes in the Genome soldiers and himself aswell. By doing so he sees' himself furfilling a family birthright, and being able to create his father's dream of Outer Heaven.
